Planning an Athens airport transfer starts earlier than the flight. The pickup time you choose for an Athens hotel, apartment or port has to fit your airline’s requirements, the road and your own morning. This guide shows how to work backwards so the request you send is complete.
Start from the flight, not the pickup
Write down the departure date, the airline and flight number, and your airline’s check-in and bag drop requirements. Use current information from your airline and from Athens International Airport, since requirements can change. This guide does not state a lead time, because the right one depends on your airline, your party and your day.
Add your own margin
Work backwards from the check-in requirement. Decide the time you want to be at the airport, then allow for the road, then for being ready at the pickup address. A road-time estimate is an estimate, not a guarantee, so leave room for the conditions on the day. Ask the team what pickup time they would suggest and how they arrived at it.
Ready to leave is not check-out
Check-out time and the moment you will be standing outside with your bags are different times. Count the time needed to settle the bill, collect luggage from storage and reach the vehicle. Tell the team your ready time, not only the time your accommodation expects you to leave.
If you are leaving from a port
Arriving at a port by ferry and then travelling to the airport are two separate stages. Disembarking is separate from the road pickup, so do not treat the ship’s arrival time as a pickup time. These routes go from a port to the airport:
- Piraeus port or city to Athens airport
- Rafina port to Athens airport
- Lavrio port or city to Athens airport
For an Athens hotel or apartment, see Athens city and hotels to Athens airport.
Write the details the team needs
- The airline, flight number and departure date.
- The pickup address, with the entrance.
- The time you will be ready.
- Passengers, bags and any child seats. See the vehicle and luggage guide if you are unsure how to list them.
A worked example of the order
Suppose your flight departs in the afternoon. Write the departure time first. Next write the time your airline asks you to check in by. Then write the time you want to arrive at the airport, with a margin of your own. Next add a window for the road, treating it as an estimate. The result is the latest time you want to be collected, and it is earlier than the one you would pick by looking at the flight alone. Finally compare it with your accommodation’s check-out arrangements. Doing this on paper takes a few minutes and avoids a rushed morning.
Ask the contingency questions
Before you accept, ask who to contact if your pickup is delayed and how you will reach the team on the morning. Ask what happens if you cannot find the driver. This guide does not state outcomes for these situations, so the answer should come in writing from the team.
Keep the confirmation with you
Save the confirmation and the contact method. TransferHub’s published service includes flight tracking and an airport waiting allowance, and the confirmation sets out the arrangements for your journey. A request is not a reservation, and a road transfer does not guarantee that you catch your flight.
