Meteora is unlike anywhere else in Greece: Byzantine monasteries balanced on colossal pillars of rock above the town of Kalambaka. On this private full-day trip from Athens you visit the great monasteries still in use, walk their painted chapels, and stop at the viewpoints where the whole rock forest spreads out beneath you.

The distance makes this a big day out, which is exactly why a private car matters: leave when it suits you, rest on the road, and spend your energy on the rocks rather than the logistics. Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Athens included.

How the day runs

Pickup in Athens (07:00). A long day, so bring water and comfortable shoes.

North through Thermopylae (approx. 2 hours 15 minutes). Two hours up the national road to a comfort stop near the pass of Thermopylae and the Leonidas monument.

On to Meteora (approx. 2 hours). Through the plain of Thessaly, with the rock pillars rising ahead of you from Kalambaka.

Meteora monasteries (approx. 3 hours). Your driver takes you up the winding road to the viewpoints and to two of the six working monasteries, usually Great Meteoron or Varlaam and Saint Stephen or Roussanou, depending on the day of the week.

Lunch in Kalambaka or Kastraki (approx. 1 hour). A taverna under the rocks, at your own pace. Lunch is flexible: a partner restaurant arranged on request (ask us for details) or a place of your own choice, at your own expense unless agreed in your quote.

Return to Athens (around 19:30). About four and a quarter hours back with a comfort stop.

Pickup and meeting point

Pickup is from your hotel, apartment or the port in Athens. If you are staying in a hotel, your driver waits for you in the lobby; at an apartment, at the entrance of the building; at the port, at the gate as you disembark, holding a sign with your name on it. Give us the full address when you book, and mention it if your street is pedestrianised or has restricted vehicle access, so the exact meeting point can be confirmed.

Book at least one day in advance. Send your date, pickup address, number of adults and children, and any child seats you need. A request is not a confirmed booking: your confirmation sets out the pickup time, meeting point, price and inclusions for your party.

What is included and what is not

Included: a private vehicle and driver for your party only, pickup and drop-off at your Athens hotel, apartment or port, an air-conditioned vehicle and bottled water. Your driver knows the route and the monasteries and will suggest the best pair to visit on the day.

Not included: monastery entrance tickets. Drivers are not licensed to accompany you inside the sites as guides.

Good to know before you go

Each monastery closes one day a week, which is why the pair you visit is chosen on the day. Knees and shoulders must be covered inside; women are asked to wear a skirt, and wraps are lent at the entrance if you do not have one. The monasteries are reached by steps, so wear shoes you can climb in. If one particular monastery matters to you, tell us before you book.

Is a Meteora day trip right for you?

Meteora is one of the longest day trips from Athens, with around eight to nine hours on the road in total. As a private tour you can skip the lunch stop or a viewpoint, but the day cannot be made much shorter.
