Santorini is one of the longest ferry trips from Athens, so most travellers sail early in the day and want the road journey to the port to be the simplest part of it. For Santorini that usually means Piraeus, the main port of Athens, but a few seasonal sailings use Rafina, and the gate at Piraeus matters as much as the port itself.

Below you will find which port to expect, the fixed TransferHub prices from the airport and from Athens hotels, and how to plan the timing. This guide covers the road transfer to and from the port. Your ferry ticket is booked separately with the ferry company, and the departure port is printed on it.

Which port does the Santorini ferry use?

Ferry booking sites list sailings to Santorini from Piraeus all year, with more departures in summer. Rafina, near the airport, has a seasonal service in the summer months on some days only, so for most dates you will be sailing from Piraeus. Ferries from Athens arrive at Athinios, the main port of Santorini.

Piraeus is a large port with many numbered gates, and island ferries leave from different gates. Check your ticket or the operator’s information for the gate, and share it with us when you book. Our Piraeus pickup checklist explains the ferry gates, cruise terminals and meeting details in more depth.

Planning the timing

Start from the sailing time printed on your ticket and plan to be at the gate well before it; ferry companies set their own check-in and boarding times, and the port is busiest on summer mornings.

From the airport: Piraeus is on the far side of Athens from the airport, so the road journey is longer than to Rafina. We track your flight and wait up to 2 hours for free in arrivals, but a delayed flight cannot delay the ship. If your flight lands close to the sailing, a night in Athens and a morning hotel to Piraeus transfer is the calmer plan. Our guide Athens Airport to a ferry covers connection margins in detail, and arriving late at Athens Airport helps if you land in the evening.

From a hotel: book the pick-up for when you want to be at the gate, and tell us your passenger count and luggage so we send the right vehicle. A sedan takes up to 4 passengers, a minivan up to 8 and a minibus up to 14.

Arriving back from Santorini

On the way back, your driver waits at the Piraeus terminal with a name sign. We track your vessel, so an early docking or a late arrival changes nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Santorini ferry leave from Piraeus or Rafina?

Mostly Piraeus. Ferry booking sites list year-round sailings to Santorini from Piraeus, while Rafina has a seasonal summer service on some days only. The port is printed on your ticket.

How do we get from Athens Airport to the Santorini ferry?

Book our Athens Airport to Piraeus port transfer, from €60 per vehicle, approx. 45 min to 1 h 10 min. If your Santorini ferry leaves from Rafina, the airport to Rafina transfer is about 30 minutes, from €40 per vehicle.

How much is a transfer from an Athens hotel to Piraeus?

From €33 per vehicle, one way: €33 for a sedan (up to 4), €48 for a minivan (up to 8) and €65 for a minibus (up to 14).

Can we fly in and take the ferry to Santorini the same day?

It can work, but leave a generous margin between landing and the sailing time. We track your flight and wait up to 2 hours for free at the airport, but we cannot hold the ship. If the timing is tight, consider a night in Athens or near the port.

Will the driver find us at Piraeus when we come back?

Yes. Your driver waits at the Piraeus terminal with a name sign. Tell us the ferry and arrival time; we track your vessel, so an early or late arrival is not a problem.

Can we cancel the transfer?

Free cancellation more than 24 hours before pickup.
